The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has stopped early a major clinical trial of the risks and benefits of combined estrogen and progestin in healthy menopausal women due to an increased risk of invasive breast cancer.

Prempro is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that combines estrogen and progestin. This pharmaceutical is used to replace hormones that decline after menopause. It is intended to relieve hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats.

Women who were given Prempro were more likely to develop serious problems compared to those in the placebo group.
